Reasons You NEED A Bernese Mountain Dog
Want to add a Berner bear to the family? I mean, I can’t blame you. Bernese Mountain Dogs are ADORABLE, especially as puppies!
Kevin is the first Bernese Mountain Dog we’ve owned. Now we can’t imagine life without him.
We often get asked, “What made you choose a Bernese Mountain Dog?”
The answer? There was a lot of time, research, and thought put into making the decision to bring a Berner home.
We would frequently walk along 23rd in Portland, Oregon. It’s an area with fun shops and restaurants, many of them dog friendly. We would often see a Bernese Mountain Dog walking with its owner in that area and would think in the back of our mind, “One-day I’m gonna have a best friend like that.”
Fast forward about 5 years…
Kevin’s brother and sister were getting older and they didn’t need their mom as much.
And like a lot of moms, it’s nice to be needed. So we started thinking about adding another family member, of the fur variety. We started researching my breed because it was important to learn the good (and not so good) things about bringing home and caring for a Berner. So we researched things like lifestyle, care, exercise and more. And this is what we discovered about having a Bernese Mountain Dog. Maybe it will help to decide if a Berner is right for your family too.
6 Reasons A Bernese Mountain Dog Is The Dog For You
We Are BEAUTIFUL
From their thick white chests and expressive rust-colored eyebrows to our giant size, we grab attention everywhere we go. Anyone who takes their Berner out in public knows to allow for extra time because undoubtedly people will approach to ask questions, get a head pat in, and even occasionally take a picture.
2. Bernese Mountain Dogs Have Unconditional Love
If you need a best friend, they are the dog for the job. Berners have so much love to give, not to mention that they are incredibly loyal and affectionate. They typically will pick one human to be their favorite (can you guess who mine is?) and will be bonded to that person for life. Family comes first and they are great with small children. Kevin prefers little humans over big ones.
3. We Can Be Major Goofballs
Needing some comic relief? That’s where Berners come in! From their silly personality to that million-dollar smile, they are anything but a dull breed. They will act like a much smaller dog and try to sit in your lap. They may knock you over when they put their weight against you (lovingly called the Berner lean), or make you giggle with the strange way we sit (AKA the turkey leg). There’s one thing for sure, a Bernese is sure to turn that frown upside down.
4. Bernese Mountain Dogs Are Mellow
Okay, I searched the web on this one. Many say that we require a ton of exercise and are hard to train. Well, Kevin for one likes a couple walks a day, but for the most part he loves to lay around.
5. Trainability Is A Plus
Bernese can be a stubborn breed, but they also want to please. That means it’s been very easy to train Kevin. He loves to make me happy so I am eager to oblige. Give him some of his favorite treats (cheese) and he will try anything.
6. Great with Kids
Bernese Mountain Dogs love family. They are especially great with kids. Kevin was a little nervous around my newborn nephew but has warmed up to him. Kevin loves to sniff and stay close to him - well, until he pulls my hair or boops my nose a bit too hard. Then he just walks away.
Beware, Berners have big booties so a quick turn can knock over a little one.
