Traveling With Your Dog: Tips For a Pawsitively Great Time

Going on vacation with your dog can be ruff! Sometimes when we are going somewhere new, we get a little scared and nervous about our surroundings. Plus, finding the right place is essential for the best vacation with your dog. My family and I love to explore, so getting out of the house and into nature is our go-to getaway. In fact, I can't wait to tell you all about the fun pet-friendly vacation we took a few weeks ago!

Time to Hit The Road!

When I woke up the morning of our trip, my pawrents had some bags packed. Where were we going? Did I get to come too?

Of course, I did!

Then, we got in the car and started driving. It was a looooong drive for me… but mom says it was only two hours! Oh well, at least I got to stick my head out the window and feel the cool air through my fur.

Bernese Mountain Dog On Vacation

We got to our getaway destination and Kevin spotted something familiar…

Kevin’s been here before. It’s called the Getaway House! They have locations all around the country but this one was at the base of Mt. Adams. We had so much fun the last time we were here and couldn’t wait to get out and start exploring again.

A Dog-Friendly Getaway Option

Getaway House is a great choice for furry friends! We got to stay in a tiny home out in the middle of the woods. It’s basically glamping. We like to pretend we are one with nature, but we also love running water and heat. They provide all of the essentials so you can spend your time focusing on what matters the most… spending time with your family and furiends!

There isn’t TV, wifi, or even cell reception…

Being at the Getaway House forced us to get comfortable with the silence and develop a good relationship with slowing down and being bored. That meant, more belly rubs for Kevin!

We played lots of games like Yahtzee and Uno. I won four rounds of solitaire in a ROW! Kevin, on the other hand, wasn’t a big fan of card games. But he got plenty of time to explore later in our trip!

Relax and Unwind

The best vacation for dogs includes lots of quality time spent with each other. Our trip was great because there was more time to be present. More time for pets and snuggles. More time to focus on what matters most— each other.

It is SO important to get away and unplug from all of the noise around us. Life gets so busy and everyone gets so focused on their daily tasks that they forget how important the time they spend with their dogs is. Sometimes, you have to disconnect to reconnect.

5 Tips For Your Next Vacation With Your Dog

If you’re ready to plan your next vacation, these are our top tips for spending quality time with your pup and having the best getaways with dogs:

1. Unpacking can wait.

After being cooped up in the car for HOURS, the first thing you should do is get out and explore! But we are also arriving at a strange, new place for your dog. Before you start unpacking the car, make sure to take your dog on a quick walk so they can stretch out their legs and take in all the smells at their own pace. The smells around the area give them important information and can help them to feel safer in our getaway space!

2. Bring the treats.

Less distractions for humans meant more attention on Kevin (and my brother). That also means some fun training! Your dog will love training time (Kevin loves the treats!), so be sure to make training fun and a part of the morning routine to help your get some mental exercise.

3. Keep it simple.

You don’t need to plan ALL THE THINGS during vacation with your dog! The best getaways are simple and include tons of quality time. Take your dog on walks, hang out around a campfire, or get some extra puppy snuggles in!

4. Location is key.

In order to have the best vacation with your dog, find a place where they are welcome! That’s why we love Getaway House… you’ll get a mini-vacation and your dog gets to come, too! It’s the best of both worlds!

5. Stay Unplugged

Remember how important it is to get rid of all of the outside noise. Spending time with your dog is best when you don’t have devices in the way! Plus, it’s MUCH easier for your dog to give you kisses without phones in front of your faces!
